The No. 2 saddle bronc rider in the world – Rusty Wright – has suffered a compound fracture of his left leg. He won’t be able to compete for the remainder of the 2016 Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association regular season. But he promises to be back in the saddle for the world finals.

Surgery was performed on Wright’s let at the Harrison Medical Center in Bremerton, Wash. on Aug. 25 after he was hurt at the Kitsap Stampede.

The 20-year-old Wright said, “I broke my tibia and fibula, and it was an open fracture because my bones went outside the skin. I also know they put a rod in my foot.”

Wright returned to his home in Milford, Utah, after the surgery.

“I spurred back and my foot got caught in my saddle and when I sat down, it broke,” Wright said. “I heard it break, and I knew it was broken right when it happened, and I jumped off the horse.”

Wright is No. 2 in the current PRCA world standings with $117,942. The PRCA regular season concludes September 30. Wright is a lock to qualify for the 2016 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo Dec. 1-10 in Las Vegas.

“I should be back for the finals,” he said. “I’m just going to try to heal up, and if I’m ready, I’m ready, and if not, I’m not.

Last year, Wright made his nationals final debut, and won rounds 4, 7 and 8. He finished third in the world standings.
