Grogan carries Stanfield to sweep over Elgin

STANFIELD — Dylan Grogan pitched a complete-game one-hitter in the 13-0 opener and then the Tigers took advantage of a timely challenge to break out for a big win 12-3 in the night cap of Friday’s Eastern Oregon League doubleheader.
Grogan struck out 13 batters, walked one and hit one in his gem on the mound and also batted 3 for 3 with two RBI and three runs. Brody Woods was 2 for 4 with two RBI and three runs.

In Game 2, the Tigers (15-1, 6-0 EOL) again jumped on Elgin (2-7, 2-2) pitching and led 7-3 with two outs and runners on in the fifth inning when Tony Flores was called out on a close play at first base.
Stanfield coach Bryan Johnson challenged the call, which would eventually be overturned when the home plate umpire ruled the first baseman’s foot left the bag, and the Tigers went on to score five more runs before the inning was over.
Grogan again went 3 for 3 at the plate with three RBI and three runs, Justin Keeney was 2 for 2, and Adrian Renner, Shayne Keltz and Thyler Monkus all had two hits.
Tony Flores pitched five innings with eight strikeouts and allowed three runs on four hits with two walks.
Stanfield stole 14 bases in the two games, led by Monkus with three.
The Tigers play at Santiam Christian on Thursday, April 21 for their next game.

VALE 14-12, RIVERSIDE 3-2 — At Boardman, the Riverside Pirates remain winless in Eastern Oregon League play after being swept by the Vale Vikings in a doubleheader on Friday.
Riverside (1-12, 0-6 EOL) was hurt by its combined 16 errors in both games, including a season-high 12 errors in game one.
In that first game, Aramis Corpus started on the mound and threw a complete game allowing 10 hits, 12 runs (six earned runs), two walks and one strikeout. Ulises Calvillo went 1-2 with a stolen base, while Mason Hegar also went 1-2 with an RBI.
In game two, Derek Bingaman started on the mound and went three innings while allowing six hits, 11 runs (five earned runs), three walks with one strikeout. Anthony Rodelo tossed two innings of relief and picked up two strikeouts.
Corpus was the top performer on offense, going 1-3 with one run scored, an RBI, and a stolen base. Sterling Bither and Wayne Killion also each added one hit apiece.

MAC-HI 2-3, LA GRANDE 8-2 — At La Grande, Jesus Vela was cruising with a 2-1 lead in the fifth inning when back-to-back defensive mistakes and an unlucky injury ended his game in the first half of a Greater Oregon League doubleheader against La Grande on Friday.
A line drive off his throwing hand sent Vela to the bench, and La Grande (7-9, 2-2 GOL) scored three runs in the inning to take the lead for good in a game it would win 8-2.
But Hunter Yensen pitched a complete game with nine strikeouts to lead the Pioneers (3-7, 1-3) to the split and their first league win of the season in Game 2.
Mac-Hi scored the winning run in the top of the eighth inning. Miguel Garcia was hit by a pitch, Bailey Debord walked and Keaton Smith hit an infield single to load the bases with one out, then Justin Carlson hit a sacrifice fly to bring in the winning run,
La Grande got its leadoff batter on in the bottom of the inning but Yensen kept him from advancing past second.
Mac-Hi’s next game is Monday at College Place (WA) at 4 p.m.

SOFTBALL
ECHO 17-17, ELGIN 1-1 — At Echo, the Cougars offense teed off against Elgin pitching to score a combined 34 runs in the doubleheader sweep on Friday afternoon.
In game one, the Cougars (11-3, 6-0 EOL) racked up 15 hits to run away with the victory, led by Cheyenne Hillard going 3-3 with two runs, two RBI, and two walks from the lead-off spot. MacKenzie Gonzales also added two hits, two runs and three RBI at the plate, while also pitching five innings allowing just one run on one hit with eight strikeouts.
In game two, Alyssa Ray got the start for Echo and also allowed just one run on one hit and struck out six Elgin batters, while the Cougars offense backed her up with 16 hits and the 17 runs.
Kenzie Blankenship blasted a fourth inning home run and finished the day a combined 3-3 with four runs scored and three RBI. Monique Montoya also had a strong day at the plate, finishing 3-5 with five runs scored and three RBI out of the No. 6 spot in the batting order.

VALE 11-11, RIVERSIDE 8-0 — At Boardman, the Riverside Pirates could not keep the Vale Vikings offense at bay, as the Vikings scored 22 runs on 29 hits to sweep the Pirates on Friday.
Skylar Wightman started on the mound for Riverside (6-9, 2-6 EOL) in both games and ended up the losing pitcher in both. Stephanie Stokoe was the leading hitter on the day finishing a combined 3-5 at the plate.
Riverside next plays at Nyssa on Friday for a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.

Tennis
HERMISTON 5, HOOD RIVER 3 — At Hood River, the Hermiston Bulldogs girls tennis team pulled together for a win over the Hood River Eagles on Friday afternoon.
Hermiston only earned one win in the singles match-ups, as Jaycee Ternes took a 6-2, 6-3 decision over Hood River’s Nikki Paulus, but then moved on into doubles play and took every match from Hood River. In those doubles matches, Hermiston won 48 games and dropped just 17.
The Bulldogs most convincing win came in the No. 1 doubles pairing where Mackenzie Hill and Chy Peterson took down Hood River’s Tial Semmes and Camryn Chambers in straight 6-0, 6-0 sets.
Hermiston next plays at The Dalles on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
