Burns powers into semifinals

PENDLETON — The No. 3 Burns Hilanders and the No. 6 Grant Union Prospectors had met three times previous to Thursday’s quarterfinals state playoff game, and Burns took all three.

Thursday was no different, with the Hilanders’ size causing problems all night en route to a 46-34 result at Warberg Court in Pendleton. Kori Pentzer and Mariah Moulton led Grant Union with nine points each.

“They did some things tonight,” Prospectors coach Mark Mosley said. “Their shots fell. And our shooting just wasn’t there tonight.”

Burns point forward Catherine Clemens gave the Prospectors fits all night. The 6-foot junior scored 19 points and grabbed 15 rebounds, five of which were on the offensive glass. As a team, Burns snatched 18 offensive rebounds to Grant Union’s nine. Clemens and Madison Carson grabbed 30 rebounds as a team. Grant Union had 31.

“We talked about that all week,” Mosley said. “We said, ‘We have to box out, and we have to rebound,’ We jump well. They jump well. But then they got four inches on us. That is one of our weak links is rebounding. We try to work on it, but it caught up to us tonight.”

But with all that rebounding dominance, the Prospectors (19-7) managed to stay close, and two Heather Mosley free throws cut the Burns lead to 13-12 in the second quarter, but it ballooned to 12 as Burns embarked on a 27-15 run.

Mosley said it was a combination of getting into “panic mode” offensively, but also acknowledged Burns’ penchant for blocking or altering shots.

“We did go into panic mode a couple times,” Mosley said. “They felt like they had to get a shot up. We typically shoot the ball better than that.”

Burns led by 11 going into the third quarter, but an 8-2 Prospectors run got them within three at 31-28 on Kori Pentzer’s basket. But four Burns points at the end of the quarter put the Hilanders up 35-28. Grant Union wouldn’t get closer than five in the fourth quarter.

Burns will take on Monroe in the semifinals tonight at 6:30 p.m. at Pendleton Convention Center.

MONROE 43, LOST RIVER 28 — The Dragons went on a 9-0 run in the first quarter to build a double-digit lead, then held on as Monroe battle its way back into the game in the second half at Pendleton High School.

A jump shot by Rose Gwillim gave Monroe (25-1) its largest lead of the game at 34-12 with 5:16 left in the third quarter, but a rash of turnovers and a few missed shots left the door cracked for Lost River (23-5).

The Raiders took advantage with a 16-0 run that was capped by Madison Storer’s jumper with 6:59 left in the game, but with the game finally within reach at 34-28 the Raiders stalled out.

Neither team scored during a nearly five-minute stretch in the fourth before Gwillim hit a free throw with two minutes to play.

Free throws from Kyndal Martin, Emily Stahl and Gwillim then got the lead back to double digits over the next minute.

Gwillim led the game with 15 points, Kailey Martin added 12, and Tayla Saluskin and Rachel Parks each scored nine to lead Lost River.

Monroe faces Burns in the semifinals tonight at 6:30 p.m. at Pendleton Convention Center.
