PILOT ROCK — The Heppner ustangs built a large lead by halftime and were able to make it stick when the Rockets surged after the break, holding on for a 57-41 victory to stay unbeaten in CBC play.

Heppner (15-1, 5-0 CBC) led 28-11 headed into the locker rooms in their Columbia Basin Conference game, and held Pilot Rock (7-12, 1-4) off with a 32-18 advantage on the glass and 43 percent field goal shooting for the game.

Weston Putman and C.J. Kindle paced Heppner with 16 points each and Patrick Collins added 10 points and eight rebounds.

Tracker Denny and Gunner McCall each scored nine to lead Pilot Rock, which shot 36 percent for the game. Chris Weinke added five points, six rebounds, four assists and three steals.

Both teams are off for a week with Pilot Rock hosting Stanfield and Heppner hosting Irrigon next Friday.

STANFIELD 67, WESTON-MCEWEN 51 — At Stanfield, the Tigers’ full-court press eventually got the better of the TigerScots and Stanfield pulled away with a 17-8 run in the third quarter on Friday in Columbia Basin Conference action.

Dylan Grogan paced all scorers with 21 points for Stanfield (12-3, 4-1 CBC) and every player that entered the game scored at least one basket.

Brett Speed netted 16 to lead Weston-McEwen (6-9, 2-3), which was able to give Stanfield trouble with tough man defense according to Tigers coach Victor Baros.

Both teams take a break for league play on Tuesday with Stanfield traveling to Sherman and Weston-McEwen playing at Mac-Hi.

PINE EAGLE 60, HELIX 51 — At Helix, the Grizzlies could not hold a halftime lead on Friday night as Pine Eagle rode a big second half from Nathan McCall to earn the victory.

Helix (2-14, 0-6 OOL) led Pine Eagle 25-24 at halftime, but came out a little flat in the third quarter offensively. And for Pine Eagle, McCall scored 15 of his game-high 31 points in the quarter to put the Grizzlies behind.

Helix tried to make a comeback in the fourth quarter, but Pine Eagle hung on in the end.

Justin Williams had a solid game for Helix, scoring a team-high 24 points and grabbing 10 rebounds — seven offensive.

Helix next plays today at Echo at 5:30 p.m.
