Dawgs, Bucks paired up for battle

CRESWELL — Although the team title is probably out of reach, the Hermiston and Pendleton boys golfers will have plenty to play for on Day 2 of the Class 5A state championships at Emerald Valley Golf Club.

After edging their Umatilla County counterparts by one stroke in last year’s final round, the Hermiston Bulldogs held a two-stroke edge on Pendleton when every card was turned in Monday.

Hermiston was 21 strokes behind leader Summit with a 330, and Pendleton was right with them at 332.

Adding to the excitement will be the teams’ pairings for Round 2, which will put the Dawgs and Bucks in a threesome with the next team up on the leaderboard — Woodburn at 327.

Playing with the No. 1’s will be Pendleton junior Reilly Hegarty, Hermiston senior Paden LaCoursiere and Woodburn senior A.J. Martinez.

Martinez had the best round on Monday with a 79, but Hegarty (80) and LaCoursiere (81) were nearly as good.

Hegarty actually had the most even round of the three with 11 pars, but three double bogeys (including a five on the par-3 17th) dropped him from top-5 contention to a tie for 12th.

LaCoursiere carded seven pars, one birdie and 10 bogeys and was tied for 18th.

One stroke behind him in a tie for 22nd were Hermiston senior Keegan Crafton and Pendleton senior Dillon George with 82.

Crescent Valley junior Kevin Garza held a three-stroke lead on Lebanon junior Marcus Frazier for the lead.

He shot a two-under 70 that included an eagle on the par-5 7th hole, three other birdies and three bogeys.

BANKS — St. Mary’s junior Jeremy Wu birdied his first three holes and didn’t break par all afternoon to build an eight-stroke lead on Cascade Christian senior Jake Quast through 18 holes at Quail Valley Golf Course.

Wu finished with nine birdies and a score of 63 to put him nine under par. Quast was the only other player to come in under par at 71.

Eighteen players were at or within 10 strokes of par, though, including Heppner sophomore Logan Grieb and Nixyaawii senior Tiya-Po Farrow.

Grieb led the Mustangs with an 80 that included two birdies, six bogeys and two double bogeys. He was tied for 15th headed into today’s final round.

Farrow was tied for 17th to pace the Golden Eagles. His 81 was a combination of 10 pars, seven bogeys and one double bogey.

Cascade Christian was only seven strokes over par as a team to take a six-stroke lead for the team title on St. Mary’s.

Also in action at Quail Valley on Monday was the boys 4A championships, which were led by Seaside (301) and Mazama’s Bryce Wortman (67).

The only local player in the field is Mac-Hi sophomore Riley Chester, and he was tied for 19th with an 84.

Chester began his round shooting two pars and a birdie, but had the first of 11 bogeys on Hole 4 and only shot par three more times in the round.

He’s still got a shot to make a move in Round 2, though, and was just five strokes outside the top 10.
