An ambulance waits outside 11th Street Market, 425 Northwest 11th St. in Hermiston, after a reported shooting.

A Umatilla man was shot and killed Wednesday night in the parking lot of the 11th Street Market in Hermiston. Umatilla County District Attorney Dan Primus said as of late Thursday afternoon there are no suspects.

According to information from Hermiston police Chief Jason Edmiston, Alonso G. Madrigal, 23, Umatilla, died from gunshot wounds in the first homicide in Hermiston in more than three years.

Edmiston said officers responded to a report of shots fired at 9:25 p.m. in the neighborhood behind 11th Street Market at 425 N.W. 11th Street and heard additional gun shots near the market while canvassing the area.

Officers found Madrigal at that location and immediately requested aid from Hermiston Fire and Emergency Services, Edmiston said, but paramedics could not save Madrigal and he died at the scene. He was found on the ground and his vehicle has been taken in as evidence.

Edmiston said Madrigal’s next of kin was notified and it is too early to speculate why the shooting occurred, and Oregon State Police forensic professionals are analyzing “a significant amount of physical evidence.” Police found at least one weapon at the scene, Primus said, but do not know at this time if they were used to kill Madrigal.

Edmiston said the major crime team, comprised of law enforcement officials from several Umatilla and Morrow County agencies, is investigating the homicide. Primus said he would expect investigators to try and find out if Wednesday night’s shooting was related to other recent shootings.

The night of Jan. 22, a 21-year-old Umatilla man was shot and another 22-year-old man suffered a head injury in a fight at the Foxwood Apartments, which is a quarter mile south on 11th Street. And a 23-year-old man was shot the night of Feb. 13 near Chinook Street and John Day Street in Umatilla.

Edmiston said there are no updates on the Foxwood case, and at this point there is no evidence that the incident and Wednesday’s shooting are connected. Police have not arrested shooting suspects in either case.

The last homicide in Hermiston was Jan. 9, 2012, when Salvador Valencia, 22, was shot dead outside the Gotta Stop Mini Mart, 1580 W. Highland Ave. — less than a mile from 11th Street Market — after a fight broke out. The Umatilla County District Attorney’s Office obtained one conviction in that case — Xavier Coria Ortiz, 19 at the time, pleaded guilty to riot, a class C felony.
