Harland Garriott, Milton-Freewater, Ore., passed away August 29, 2014, at his home at the age of 90 years.

Funeral services will be Tuesday, September 9, 2014, at 1:30 p.m. at the First Christian Church in Milton-Freewater. Concluding services and interment will be in the Milton-Freewater Cemetery.

Harland was born September 8, 1923, in Walla Walla, Wash., the son of Harold H. and Trula L. Irons Garriott. He attended St. Catherine Catholic Academy in Pendleton, then graduated from Pendleton High School.

After graduating from high school, he joined the U.S. Marine Corps Special Services, with the Fourth Marine Raider Battalion, serving on the President Polk Kaiser Coffin against the enemy at Beleliu, Palau Group, Iwo Jima, and Volcano Islands.

After his discharge from the Marines, he attended the University of California at Berkley. Harland worked as a self-employed farmer raising strawberries, peaches, apples, sheep and cattle.

He married Marcene Harris Garriott three times. The couple built, owned and operated a bowling alley in Hermiston. They were also partners with Bill and June Harder and Lew Renville in the Totem Bowl, Milton-Freewaters first and only bowling alley.

Harland also worked in Nevada and for the Oregon State Employment Services and various other jobs. He enjoyed fishing, playing golf, and visiting with friends. He also enjoyed being a rock hound with his father. Harland is a life member of BPOE #2146.

He is survived by his daughter Jaklin and Jeffrey Callow of Walla Walla, Wash.; his best friend of 70 years, Marcene Garriott of Milton-Freewater, Ore.; a grandson, Chad and Megan Womack of Milton-Freewater, Ore.; a granddaughter, Sheri and Erik Vammen of New York City, N.Y.; a bonus grandson, Joseph and Jayme Callow of Vancouver, Wash.; and a great-granddaughter, Sophie Louise Womack of Milton-Freewater, Ore.

Harland was preceded in death by a half brother Gene Garriott of Albuquerque, New Mexico.
