THE DALLES During his first round at the Columbia River Conference championships, Pendletons Brayden Pulver attacked The Dalles Country Club with brute force.
In Tuesdays second round the Buckaroo freshman resisted the urge to grip it and rip it and methodically played his way to the top of the leaderboard with a one-over par 72.
By putting himself in better position off the tee, Pulver needed just 29 putts on Tuesday and finished with a two-round score of 154 that overtook The Dalles Chase Snodgrass (159) for the individual title.
Furthermore, Pulver was joined in the top five by two of his teammates as Pendleton distanced itself from a tight team race on Day 2.
The boys were joined as CRC champions when the girls team duplicated a sweep atop the leaderboard.
Freshman Haley Greb won the individual title by matching her 79 from Day 1 for a two-round 158 total. She unseated sophomore sister Shelby as the CRC champion, an outcome the older Greb predicted after winning last seasons title.
Shelby was just three strokes back in second place, and senior Rachel Phinney finished fourth to punctuate their landslide victory. Pendleton lowered its overall score on Day 2 as well and finished at 364-352716.
Joining the youth surge for the Buckaroos was boys freshman Nathan Som in third (160).
Boys coach Nels Nelson said hes excited to take such a young group of players to state.
Im really enthused for the freshmen because theyre really playing above their age, he said. I think they can handle state pretty well. They dont really get flustered.
Hermistons boys and girls finished in second place and will join Pendleton at next weeks state finals. The two-round championships begin on Monday at Quail Valley (Banks) for the boys and Emerald Valley (Creswell) for the girls.
