Silverton mayor sells shoes for city

As mayor of Silverton, Stu Rasmussen has opened his ears, heart and mind to serve his constituents.
Now the man who claims to have “legs that will stop traffic and a face that will stop a clock,” has opened up his closet to help with the city’s financial woes.
With the help of a third party, Rasmussen is selling his shoes — a pair of stilettos featuring floral, cheetah and snakeskin print — for $10,000.
In 2008, Rasmussen became the nation’s first openly transgender mayor, and according to the eBay listing, this is “a unique opportunity for you to acquire a bit of authentic American history.”
It also appears to be a way to help support local non-profits and public amenities.
Rasmussen said Silverton is a well-run city that even during an economic downturn has provided essential services and a few “frills” that make living there pretty special.
“But now, like most of America, we’re turning over the sofa cushions to find dimes and nickels to stay afloat,” Rasmussen said.
When people start comparing needs to wants, amenities like the Silverton Senior Center and the community swimming pool are seen as an extra burden on city coffers, Rasmussen said.
The mayor has sold items through the Senior Center Thrift Shop in the past as a way to support the cause, but felt items like his shoes could bring in more cash if presented to a larger audience.
As an elected official in Oregon, Rasmussen cannot personally profit from his public office, so the proceeds are seen as a tax-deductible donation.
Political memorabilia is often sold to collectors. Whoever buys the shoes will receive a photo of Rasmussen and a personally signed, officially sealed and notarized certificate of authenticity on City of Silverton letterhead.
