A Polish military man has died in a climbing accident on Mount Hood. Authorities have spotted the body, but have not been able to retrieve it.

Sgt. Pete Hughes is with the Hood River County sheriff’s office. He says the body of Sebastian Kinasiewicz was spotted from the air Tuesday morning. He says the climber appears to have fallen about 1,000 feet, to a place recovery crews can’t go right now:

“It is extremely dangerous where his body is at. And he’s just unrecoverable at this point. In fact, a helicopter was there that could see boulders falling down into this basin. Unfortunately, this time of year when it’s warm, stuff constantly falls down into that basin,” he said.

Hughes says rescue teams began searching for the climber on Monday.

Kinasieqicz was in the United States for drone training in Bingen, Washington.
