As Oregon logging slows, state cuts forestry jobs

COOS BAY, Ore. (AP) — As logging slows, seven jobs will be cut from the state forestry office in Coos Bay.
Department of Forestry spokesman Rod Nichols says the cuts will come from 23 positions that handle the management plan for the Elliott State Forest.
The World newspaper in Coos Bay reports (http://bit.ly/Ya96d9) that the yearly harvest yield was initially anticipated at 40 million board feet, but that’s been reduced to 15 million board feet.
A federal judge issued an injunction in November halting logging at 11 state forest timber sales in habitat of the marbled murrelet, a threatened seabird.
The department says the cuts will be effective by July 1, and it’s trying to find other jobs for the workers.
The Elliott was Oregon’s first state forest. The logging generates education funding.
