Suspect Jacob Tyler Roberts

At a 10 a.m. press conference Wednesday, Clackamas County Sheriff Craig Roberts identified the shooter in Tuesday’s incident as Jacob Tyler Roberts.

Roberts was born in 1990, officials said.

Sheriff Roberts said the gunman’s motive is not known.

The department released this timeline of events.

They also released the following bullet points of Tuesday’s events:

– During this attack, the suspect was armed with an AR-15 semi-automatic rifle.- The rifle was stolen yesterday from a person known to the suspect.- At the time of the attack, Roberts was wearing a load-bearing vest — NOT a bulletproof vest, as has been reported.- He was also wearing a hockey-style face mask.- We have not yet established how many shots Mr. Roberts fired during the attack, although we believe he was carrying a large amount of ammunition.

“We do not understand the motive of this attack, except to say that there’s no apparent relationship between the suspect and his victims,” he said.

The two victims were identified as 45 year-old Steven Matthew Forsyth of West Linn and Cindy Ann Yuille, 54 of Northeast Portland.

At the press conference, photos of Yuille and Forsyth were shared with the media and statements from their families were read. Families asked for privacy.

Yuille family statement:

“Cindy was everybody’s friend. She was a wonderful person who was very caring and put others first. “The family has advised us they want time and space to grieve their loss and will not be giving interviews at this time. “The family will make a statement at an unspecified later date through the Sheriff’s Office.”

Forsyth family statement:

“Steven Mathew Forsyth was a loving husband, father of two children, son, brother, uncle, youth sports coach and friend to the many people who had the privilege to meet him.”Steve was one of the most passionate people with a true entrepreneurial spirit that drove him to start his business, Coastoms. He had a great sense of humor and a zest for life. He had vision and a belief in others that brought great joy and value to many lives. “He will be sorely missed by all who knew him.The family asks that the media respect their desire for privacy as they grieve their loss. They will not be granting any interviews.”

A friend told the Oregonian Forsyth had worked in radio for many years in the Portland area.

Yuille worked at Kaiser as a hospice nurse. Kaiser released this statement Wednesday afternoon:

STATEMENT FROM KAISER PERMANENTE

Yesterday we were all shocked and saddened by the tragic events at Clackamas Town Center. Unfortunately, today we’ve learned that one of the victims was a member of the Kaiser Permanente family.Cindy Yuille, who worked as a nurse on our hospice care team, was one of the two shooting fatalities in the incident. Cindy worked at Kaiser Permanente for 16 years. Cindy’s husband is also a nurse on our hospice care team.Cindy was a beloved caregiver for the kind and compassionate support she provided for patients and families at times of impending loss and need.Our hearts are with Cindy’s husband and family as they absorb this tragedy and grieve. We ask that you respect the privacy of the family at this most difficult time. We also know that co-workers are mourning Cindy’s loss. Kaiser Permanente has made available counseling services to employees as they struggle to accept this heartbreaking loss.

Officials said the suspect was armed with an AR-15 semi-automatic rifle stolen from an acquaintance.

Officials corrected rumors and misinformation reported earlier in the media.

For example, when the gunman’s fingerprints were searched, a match was found, officials said.

Also, this was not a terrorist attack, police said.

Officials said that the gunman acted alone.

Police served a search warrant at Roberts’ home on 84th Ave in Portland. They also recovered his car from the mall.

Investigators say Roberts was wearing a mask and vest to carry ammunition when he entered the mall.

Officials credited the mall and many “heroes” for handling the incident without more deaths or injuries.

“Ten thousand people in the mall at one time kept a level head, they got themselves out of the mall, they helped others get out,” Sheriff Roberts told reporters.

Sheriff Roberts also said the gun appeared to have jammed.

“Based on the evidence we obtained it appears that the suspect’s rifle did jam while he was attacking individuals in the food court. However he was able to get the gun working again,” he told reporters.

Spokesman Sgt. Adam Phillips reiterated that the gunman acted alone, “Every indication that we have is that he acted solely on his own in carrying out this heinous, horrible, tragic crime.”

Update earlier Wednesday:

The Clackamas County Sheriff wants to know why a man in his 20s walked into the Clackamas Town Center Tuesday afternoon and started firing.

Three people are dead, including the gunman, who was described by eyewitnesses as wearing camouflage and a white mask. Authorities say the gunman killed himself. The identities of the shooter and the deceased are not being released.

At a press conference Tuesday night, Clackamas County Sheriff Craig Roberts described the reaction of shoppers and mall employees after shots were fired

“There was about 10,000 people at the mall. So there was a huge amount of people running in different directions and it was chaos for a lot of citizens. But I want to recognize we had some true heroes stepping up at this time of high stress for a lot of people in there.”

Those heroes included ER nurses and physicians on the scene providing care. One woman was injured in the shooting and taken to OHSU. She is identified as Kristina Shevchenko, and is listed in serious condition.

Sheriff Roberts says it’s especially heartbreaking that this happened at this time of the year.

“The mall is supposed to be a place that we can all take our families, feel comfortable that this is a great place, especially at the holiday season like this, and these things aren’t supposed to happen.”

The sheriff’s office has spent the night investigating what happened, and is tentatively planning to hold another press conference at 10 Wednesday morning.

Information has been slow in coming since the first 911 calls starting coming in Tuesday afternoon.

Clackamas County Sergeant Adam Phillips declined to guess about what type of gun was used.

“I do not have information to share with you about what type of weapon it was, I don’t know how many shots were fired, there’s a lot of speculation around it. But we’re going to report on what we actually know, not speculation.”

About a hundred law enforcement officers swarmed in from around the region to assist in the incident. From the federal government ATF and the FBI are also involved. The mall will be closed Wednesday.
