Joan Hoke Corey

Joan Hoke Corey, 93, passed away peacefully in Pendleton, Oregon, on September 12, 2012. She was born May 14, 1919, at Hot Lake, Oregon, to Mac Hoke and Carrie Williams Hoke Lister. A memorial service will occur at the Church of the Redeemer (Episcopal) in Pendleton on Thursday, September 20, 2012, at 4 p.m.

Joan was raised in Pendleton and attended local schools, graduating from Pendleton High School in 1937. She attended and graduated from University of Oregon in 1941. In college she met her future husband, George Howard Corey, of Coos Bay and Salem, Oregon. Joan and George married at the Presbyterian Church in Pendleton, Oregon, on September 26, 1942. George passed away on April 23, 2009.

Joan spent her entire adult married life in Pendleton, where she was active in business and community affairs, and where she and George raised their three children. Joan served on the board of directors and as co-president of Cunningham Sheep Company, a family ranching company purchased by her father Mac Hoke in the 1920s. Joan followed the traditions of her mother, Carrie Hoke, in serving on the John Vert Council. She was active for years in Chapter CM, PEO?sisterhood, in Pendleton. She was co-chair of the first Christmas Cotillion, for the local chapter of the American Cancer Society. For decades she was an active member of the Altar Guild of the Church of the Redeemer. She regularly assisted in functions of the Current Literature group, Kill Kare, and Dinner Dance.

She loved her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She regularly addressed with them their most basic needs and always was helpful and instructive to them as they went about their daily lives. Though a diminutive person, she was purposeful in the family household. She expected manners, organization and good grades from her family. She had a wonderful and engaging spirit. She loved shopping with anyone and anywhere.

Joan is survived by her son Steven Hoke Corey and his wife Susan Olsen Corey of ?Pendleton, her daughter Susan Carrie Corey of Portland, and her son Dr. Douglas George Corey of Pendleton; grandchildren Michael J.H. Corey and his wife Jenny Corey, Megan E. Furstenberg and her husband Tyson Furstenberg, Corey Elizabeth Maltase, Mac Thomas Maltase, Cydney Corey Curtis and her husband Kipp Curtis, and George Robert Corey; and great-grandchildren Easton John Hoke Corey, Ellie Jo Ann Corey, Reese Joan Furstenberg, and Reid Steven Robert Furstenberg. She also is survived by her sister Helen Hoke Levy and her husband Louis Levy of Pendleton, and seven nieces and nephews. She is survived by her cousin Gail Brannan of Evergreen, Colorado. She was preceded in death by her parents, infant brother Max Hoke, her husband, and her daughter-in-law Heather Hales Corey.
