Adding insult to injury and further incensing local baseball fans, President W.N. Sweet of the Western Tri-state league has raised the salary of Umpire Golden against whom serious charges were filed yesterday by Manager Jesse T. Garrett of the Pendleton team. Local fans, when they learned of the salary increase for an umpire, whom they firmly believe to be incompetent and morally crooked and against whom they protested as an official in the final and crucial series, were aroused to a high pitch of indignation. Knowing from Goldens actions and statements while here that he is not above favoring a home team and that he is very susceptible to secret influences, they regard the action of Sweet in the face of Pendletons protest as a bid for the benefit of close decisions for the Boise team.

The contract of the largest union in the state expired today, and strike headquarters were scheduled to open in eight Oregon cities, including Pendleton. The Oregon Public Employees Union will open strike headquarters in Pendleton today at 5:30 p.m. with a reception in the John Murray Building, 721 S.E. Third St. If a strike does occur, the various strike headquarters are designed to identify the needs of workers and to provide for them, including things like food and day care, said Bill Street, secretary-treasurer of the local union chapter.
