The state medical examiner says a mother and two children recovered from a Salem home Tuesday, were killed by gunshots.

A third child, a 4-month-old, likely died of asphyxiation.

They died in an apparent domestic murder-suicide.

Police say the bodies of the woman and children were discovered early Tuesday in a Salem home that burned.

But Dr. Larry Lewmen of the state medical office, says nobody died of smoke inhallation or anything associated with the house fire.

“The adult female died of two gunshot wounds to the head. There were two children, aged three and four. One of them was shot twice in the head, the other one was shot once in the head. And the infant, which I think was about four months old, was asphyxiated. We’re still working on that. She was not shot.”

Lewman is also scheduled to conduct an autopsy on a man whose body was found in a car near Cottage Grove.

Police believe he may be the father of the children and the husband of the woman.
