The oil furnace at Umatilla High School exploded last night, sending fumes and soot throughout the building and causing damage to the furnace room. No fire resulted. Windows were blown out in the room, the door frames were broken and the walls were bulged outward. Holes in the furnace room ceiling also were reported. The school was without heat this morning and school was not convened. School officials say that school sessions will not be taken up until a new furnace is installed.

A decision to deny Umatilla County more than half of a tax levy approved in August will not affect the four county services the levy was to have funded, County Commissioner Bill Hansell said Wednesday. But the county will have to find another way to pay for capital expenses, Hansell said. Oregon Tax Court Judge Carl Byers said Tuesday that the county can collect just $154,000 of a $355,000 levy approved by voters in August. Byers ruled that because the county failed to place a legal ad before the August election, it can only collect the last levy amount advertised, which was $154,493. The levy was to help fund the county library system, watermasters office, veterans office and cooperative extension services.
