In its ninth year, the annual Ragtime & Vintage Music Festival will begin and end this weekend in Shaniko. However, sandwiched in between will be activities in nearby Moro. The event is free; however, donations are accepted.
The event kicks off Friday at noon at the restored Shaniko Schoolhouse with the showing of an old-fashioned silent movie. Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde will be featured with live piano accompaniment by Keith Taylor, festival organizer. The Haines resident has studied music in Paris with Rene Leibowitz.
The event will continue with scheduled performers taking the stage until 6 p.m. There will be a fundraising dinner on Friday from 6-7 p.m. by the Shaniko Preservation Guild. After the dinner break, those interested in listening or playing will assemble from 7-11 p.m. at The Shaniko Sage & Trading Post, where the festival originated. People are encouraged to bring their requests because the musicians are well-versed in vintage music.
The Saturday lineup historically takes place at the trading post and school, but this year the festival will move for a day to Moro playing at the old, and soon-to-be called again, Branding Iron on Main Street. On tap for Saturday will include an old upright piano from noon to 6 p.m. and then the musical jam session from 7-11 p.m.
The last performance of the event is Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Shaniko Schoolhouse. The suggested donation for the all-performer concert is $5, which helps musicians with transportation costs.
