PENDLETON A little bit of Eastern Oregons wind, rain and soil will contribute to every bottle of a new mustard on store shelves soon.

Thats because the new Suzies Mustard brand from local condiment maker Barhyte Specialty Foods is made with locally grown mustard and wind-powered electricity, Chris Barhyte said.

Earlier this year, Barhyte, a Pendleton firm, contracted with Jones and Jones Ranch in Helix for 1,100 acres of mustard, a years supply. Now theyre harvesting the fruits of their labor and even using plastic bottles made in Vancouver.

Were going for a whole Northwest-based sustainable local item, he said.

The Barhyte processing facility also bought 4,000 kilowatt hours of wind energy from Pacific Powers Blue Sky program for the first time as an experiment.

Locally, were doing all the things we can right around us, he said.
