- Weston-McEwen's Leanne Harnden, left, hugs teammate Morgan Entze after their semifinal win over Regis Friday at the Class 2A OSAA State Volleyball Championships in Forest Grove.
FOREST GROVE Weston-McEwen handled Bonanza and Regis in three games each at the Class 2A state volleyball championships on Friday.
Jaw-dropping kills and a season-high 15 blocks lifted the TigerScots 25-20, 25-19, 25-12 over a taller No. 4 seeded Bonanza team that defeated several Class 3A teams this year and went undefeated in Class 2A.
The nail in the coffin in Game 3 was after they got ahead three points (6-3), we methodically closed it, said coach Shawn White. After that you could kind of see they gave up a bit.
Blue Mountain Conference Player of the Year Renee Baumann hit 16 kills in the quarterfinal versus the Antlers . Tiffany Cain added 13 and setter Morgan Entze drilled seven.
The slew of Weston-McEwen kills were aimed primarily in deep corner holes and at a weak Antlers sideline defense. Lengthy middle blockers were rendered helpless during nine-point and six-point TigerScots runs in Games 2 and 3.
After the semifinal match versus Bonanza, the TigerScots took a six-hour break before returning to battle Regis, a No. 2 seed.
Again undersized height-wise, Weston-McEwen exploited its athleticism to defeat Regis 25-17, 25-13, 25-19. The TigerScots came out gunning, running up a 20-10 Game 1 lead.
Regis showed how dangerous it was even when down significant points. The Rams made a five-point run of their own to close within five.
The first two games we played basically mistake-free and just pounded them, White said.
Weston-McEwen setter Morgan Entze played through a cold she caught a week prior to the state tournament. The setback was not plain to the naked eye, as the junior did her part assisting 12 Cain kills, seven to Baumann and three to Haley Freske, who also put up six big blocks.
We played well, but when we made errors we didnt let them affect us, Entze said. Were really good at letting it go and were very close as a team which helps us a lot.
White could not have asked for better performances from his team on Friday. Now with momentum, Weston-McEwen will play a Faith Bible team that displaced the TigerScots in five games earlier this year for the state championship.
The Class 2A state volleyball championship match will begin at 8:30 p.m. on Saturday and can be followed live at www.osaa.org.
