Heppner cruises to tourney title

BOARDMAN – The championship of the Columbia River Bash got ugly in a hurry Tuesday as the Heppner Mustangs throttled the Riverside Pirates 21-4 in five innings of preseason baseball in Boardman.
Heppner (4-1) scored its runs on just nine hits thanks to eight walks, four hit batters and nine errors by Riverside (2-1-1).
The Mustangs entered the tournament on the heels of a win over defending state champion Umpqua Valley Christian in a John Day tournament.
Jared Huddleston started on the mound for the Mustangs Tuesday and pitched three full innings, allowing one earned run. Willy Gentry came on in the fourth to close out the win.
Huddleston was 2-for-4 at the plate with a double, Keenan Jack was 2-for-3 with a triple and John Boyce was 2-for-4 with a double for Heppner.
Cody Fredrickson was 2-for-3 and Trevor Graff was 2-for-2 for Riverside.
On Monday, Heppner earned wins over Umatilla, 16-0, and Elgin, 11-8.
Justin Gutierrez hit a home run and Brent Eckman added a double against Umatilla while Boyce, Jack and Drew Bannon hit doubles against Elgin.
Drew Johnson and Gutierrez picked up wins on the mound.
