PORTLAND – The Oregon School Activities Association made their final ruling Monday on classification and districting for Oregon high school athletics over the next four years.
After hearing testimony during a meeting of the OSAA Executive Board in Portland, the board chose to accept the final recommendation of the OSAA Classification and Districting Committee without any changes.
For most of the area’s schools, that means they’ll remain in their current leagues and classifications with no changes when the plan goes into effect for the 2010 school year. The only exceptions are Pendleton and Hermiston, which will leave the disbanded Intermountain Conference for the new Columbia River Conference.
The new CRC?also will feature Hood River Valley and The Dalles-Wahtonka. It will be one of two four-school leagues in the state, the other being Class 4A’s Greater Oregon League.
The OSAA?also set the classification limits for the next four years.
To be labeled Class 1A a school’s enrollment has to be below 105 students; Class 2A from 225-106; Class 3A?399-226; Class 4A 869-400; Class 5A?1,479-870; Class 6A?more than 1,480.
Based on the OSAA’s records, Hermiston has an enrollment of 1,347 and will be the largest school in the CRC. Pendleton’s enrollment is 927, making them the second smallest in front of The Dalles- Wahtonka, which has 915.
Riverside, which lobbied to drop down to Class 2A, remains the smallest school in the Eastern Oregon League with an enrollment of 243.
