Bank of America security officials have confirmed at least one recent case of e-mail “phishing” of a Umatilla County customer.
The customer received a personal e-mail with the subject: >>.
The e-mail message included the bank’s logo and a bold, colored headline stating, “Your Online Banking is Blocked.”
The body of the e-mail message read, “We recently reviewed your account, and suspect that your Bank of America account may have been accessed by an unauthorized third party. …”
The message continued, saying the bank is concerned about protecting customers’ security. It said the bank “as a preventative measure,” had temporarily limited access to sensitive account features.”
The e-mail recommended the customer follow a Web link “to restore … account access” and so the bank could “confirm your identity.”
The same customer also received a similar e-mail at work.
Again, it didn’t address the customer by name, but said, “Attention! Your account has been violated!”
The e-mail stated someone “with ip address 149.225.126.87 tried to access your personal account!”
The message directed the customer to click a different link than the other message and to “enter your account information to confirm that you are not currently away.”
The message concluded, “You have 3 days to confirm account information or your account will be locked,”
A bank security officer said the bank doesn’t threaten its customers and doesn’t need to ask customers to identify themselves. When it e-mails customers, it always addresses them by name, she said.
She described the e-mail as someone’s attempt to collect the customer’s personal information.
