Weather runs away with show

STANFIELD – The story of the day early on at Stanfield’s Dick Horyna Invitational was the dedication of the track complex to former coach Art Derbyshire.

But the strong, steady winds quickly stole the show as athletes had to worry about keeping warm first and competing second. By the end of the day, Heppner had come away with the girls’ win and Joseph edged Echo for first in the boys’ competition, but all were glad to get back on their buses and head home.

“I think they’re a little discouraged, but I think that’s everybody,” Riverside distance coach Dawn Callow said. “The kids were having a hard time getting warm, they didn’t want to take their sweats off.”

“It’s extremely hard but it is making them better athletes for sure,” Heppner coach Marianne Smith said of the recent spat of uncomfortable weather. “I’m excited to see what they can do on a great day.”

Weston-McEwen coach Loran Monaco had the best perspective on the weather saying, “We could be over in Joseph where they’ve still got snow on the ground.”

With a strong headwind blowing down the final stretch of the track, the runners suffered the most. As a result, most times were down from the first meet of the year.

“Starting off it was great but when you hit that corner the wind comes out of nowhere,” said Umatilla’s Peter Stice. “The last 200 (meters) is where the race is won and lost and I didn’t think I was going to hold onto the lead.”

He did, though, winning the 800-meter run by more than three seconds.

One runner that had an exceptional day was Echo’s Mike Madison. Madison won the 100, 200, 400 and was part of the first-place 4×100 relay team.

Teammate Bryce Fritz finished second in the 100 and 200 and won the long jump with a leap of 20 feet, six inches.

Heppner’s Jordan Hatfield scored a pair of wins in the 300 intermediate hurdles and the triple jump.

With the wind blowing across the course, Ione’s Kip Krebs set a personal best in the discus with his third-place throw of 130-5.

In the girls’ events, Riverside’s Amy Kegler won the 100 for the second day in a row with a time of 13.27.

Coach Dave Boor said he had some sore muscles on his team after competing at the Buck Classic Thursday, but he thought the team turned in some good performances nonetheless.

Heppner’s Catherine McElligot took first in the 700 and second in the 1,500 behind Umatilla’s Nancy Cardenas, who also won the 3,000.

Helix’s Kaitlyn Muller also grabbed two wins, throwing for 96-6 in the discus and jumping for 32-8 in the triple jump.
