PENDLETON – Earl L. Shepard died Thursday, March 13, 2008 at his home near Rieth. He was 86 years old.
At his request, no services will be held. Disposition was by cremation. Memorials in his memory may be directed to the charity of one’s choice. Burns Mortuary of Pendleton is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Shepherd was born March 22, 1921 in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. He was the son of Lyle and Esther (Wertz) Shepard. He was raised and educated in Florida.
After his schooling he joined the United States Army and served during World War II. He was discharge in 1947 and later in 1947 he married Margaret White in Hawarden, Iowa. The couple lived in Iowa while Mr. Shepard worked at gas station before he moved his family to the Rieth in 1951. He worked at Harris Pine Mill from 1951 until 1961. In 1961 he began working as a laboratory technician for the Bureau of Reclamation. He worked in Montana and North Dakota until his retirement in 1983 when he and his wife returned to Rieth.
He greatly enjoyed piano tuning, gardening, cross word puzzles and studying the stars. He was also a member of the Seventh Day Adventist church of Pendleton.
He is survived by his wife, four daughters, Lorrie Townsend of California; Shirley Bruner of Pendleton; Pearl Younker of Juneau, Alaska and Nancy Freeland of Goldendale, Wash; sister Grace Williams of Ariz.; 11 grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. He was preceded in his death by his parents.
