ENTERPRISE 19. STANFIELD 38 – In Stanfield, the Tigers led 14-12 at the half Friday, but couldn’t hold on as a late drive by the Outlaws ended in an 11-yard touchdown run by Gage Nebel to secure the win.

Matt Ellis had a big day for the Tigers (2-5, 1-4 Blue Mountain Conference) with 102 passing yards, 80 rushing yards and two total touchdowns in the loss.

Defensively, Kenny Kashuba racked up 21 tackles and Omar Ibarra added another 20 to keep the Tigers in the game.

Josh Grabeel had 86 yards on the ground for the Tigers, who will host Elgin next week.

VALE 38, RIVERSIDE 6 – In Boardman, the Pirates fell to the Vikings in game where Vale rushed for 432 yards on 42 rushing attempts and only attempted to pass three times Friday.

Head coach Robin Graff said that Riverside simply didn’t have the answer on defense for the Vale rushing attack.

Graff praised Bryce Doherty and Shaine Simpson for their effort in the loss.

GRANT UNION 32, UMATILLA 12 – In Umatilla, two inches separated the Vikings from potentially bagging the biggest upset of their amazing season. Down by eight on the Prospectors’ 12-yard line and a fourth-and-one situation in the fourth quarter, the Vikings were stopped short of a first down.

The chain reaction was 12 unanswered points by Grant Union to put the game away 32-12.

It was a tail of two halves for Umatilla, as Nathan Creason and the rest of the Viking running game moved against Grant Union with ease, leading 12-0 in the second quarter. The second half was not as kind, however, with the Prospectors dominating the ball and time of possession.

“The first half we moved up and down the field on them,” coach Kelly Allen said. “In the fourth quarter we only had about 20 yards of total offense. We are a good football team, but we have to come out and play two halves of football.”

The Vikings now find themselves in a do or die situation, where they must win out against Burns and Nyssa to keep the hopes of a playoff berth alive.

ELGIN 36, PILOT ROCK 31 – In Elgin, the Pilot Rock Rockets couldn’t hold on to a 21-8 halftime lead and took their second Blue Mountain Conference loss Friday.

The loss moves them into third place and, according to coach Troy Jerome, they’ll have to win their two remaining games (Irrigon and Weston-McEwen) “and see what happens” with the playoff picture in which the top three teams go.

Travis Copeland rushed for 167 yards while Chance Bandy ran for 88 and passed for 146 in the losing effort. Elgin rattled off 218 yards on the ground in a game Jerome said the Rockets didn’t tackle very well in the second half.

LA GRANDE 28, MCLOUGHLIN 7 – In Milton-Freewater, the Pioneers got a rough introduction to league play, getting outscored in the second half and losing to previously winless La Grande 28-7.

“I’m kind of disappointed,” Mac-Hi coach Jake Tolan said. “We didn’t play a very good second half. To go into halftime 7-7 was nice, but in the second half we had turnovers and penalties.”

The Tigers were also able to keep Mac-Hi’s offense in check through most of the game, allowing just 45 yards on the ground. Quarterback A.C. Bolling also had two costly interceptions that really hurt the Pioneers chances of getting back into the game.

“We’re disappointed because we believe we’re the better team,” Tolan said. “But we’ll have to regroup and try to prepare for Ontario. It doesn’t get any easier.”
