HERMISTON – Maryl Featherstone, new Hermiston Chamber board president, has appointed Joe Young chairman of the Leadership Hermiston Steering Committee for the coming year.
At the same time, the chamber is recruiting candidates from area businesses, public and private agencies, civic and other organizations for the Leadership Hermiston program. Enrollment is open until July 15.
Candidates for Leadership Hermiston must be concerned about the future of Hermiston and be committed to personal involvement in shaping its future, said Debbie Pedro, chamber executive and 2007 Leadership Hermiston graduate.
Pedro said participants will be chosen based on criteria established by the Hermiston Chamber’s board of directors. Eighteen candidates will be accepted into the program.
The participants in Leadership Hermiston should represent all areas of the community, including private and public interests. Pedro encourages all chamber members to have someone from their business take part.
Leadership Hermiston participants will explore and examine, ask critical questions and work together with the community to find answers. The program year begins with a one-day retreat in September. After the retreat, participants meet one full day each month through May for intense study and interaction.
Participants are exposed to current issues and leaders from every point on the spectrum of community life. Through simulations, debates and small-group activities, they discuss topics ranging from the community’s business and economic climate to education, health care and the arts.
