Ione moves to first place in Big Sky-East after high-scoring battle

REDMOND – The Ione Cardinals (13-6, 9-3 Big Sky-East) survived an offensive battle Friday night to beat Crook County Christian 88-80 and take first place in the East Division after No. 10 Nixyaawii lost 61-42 to South Wasco County.

Ione’s Paul Hams led all scorers with 26 points, usual sixth man Clay Morter added 18 in a starting role, Matt Hams sank 16, Kip Krebs poured in 14 and Alan Rietmann chipped in 11.

“It was kind of a fast-paced game,” Ione coach Dennis Stefani said. “Both teams were pretty hot.”

WESTON-McEWEN 54, STANFIELD 49 – The TigerScots (9-11, 8-3 Blue Mountain Conference) keep second place in the BMC to themselves after a five-point victory over the Tigers (7-10, 6-5), who were tied for third with Heppner going into the evening.

Each team had two players in double figures: for Weston-McEwen, Jeff Giger with 15 and Rob Duke with 13; and for Stanfield, Matt Ellis with 13 and Dauson Dorran with 12.

PILOT ROCK 59, ELGIN 52 – In Pilot Rock, Jared Doss and Tyrel Graham had 19 points each as the Rockets keep their playoff hopes alive with the Blue Mountain Conference win.

The Rockets (9-12, 6-5 BMC) led throughout the game, but the Huskies would not roll over.

“Elgin played very hard and we had to work for the win,” Rockets coach Sam Byrnes said. “We’re working toward seeding in the districts so every game counts.”

Justin Iles scored 11 points for the Grizzlies (12-8, 6-6 BSC) while Logan Swaggart and Anthoney Clayton had 10 points each.

“We just didn’t have enough discipline in our half-court game,” Helix coach Dwayne Dunlap said.
