HERMISTON – Susan Michelle Hafen, a hospital worker and community volunteer, died Friday, Jan. 26, 2007, at her home. She was 55.

A recitation of the rosary will be held at 6 p.m. today at Burns Mortuary Chapel in Hermiston. A mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Our Lady of Angels Catholic Church in Hermiston with burial to follow at Hermiston Cemetery.

Mrs. Hafen was born Oct. 18, 1951, in Des Moines, Iowa, to Dr. Charles Edward and Anne R. Litten Sappington.

She graduated from Hermiston High School in 1969 and graduated with honors from Sacred Heart School of Nursing in Spokane. She worked at Sacred Heart Medical Center and attended Gonzaga University before working as a traveling nurse. She was working in Las Vegas where she met and married Corey Hafen.

After the death of her husband, Mrs. Hafen relocated to Hermiston, where she worked at Good Shepherd Medical Center.

Mrs. Hafen did volunteer work at Our Lady of Angels Catholic Church, including the soup kitchen, the Eucharistic Ministry, the Schoenstott Group. She helped with religious education, was involved in the S.M.A.R.T. program and also helped with the First Christian Church’s soup kitchen.

She enjoyed gardening, riding bikes, animals, and playing the organ.

She is survived by mother Anne Sappington of Hermiston; daughter Erica Hafen of Portland; brother Blake Sappington of Tarpon Springs, Fla.; sisters Sheila Golden of Nine Mile Falls, Wash., and Charlanne Sappington of Vancouver, Wash.

She was preceded in death by her husband and father.

Memorial contributions may be made to Our Lady of Angels Catholic Church’s soup kitchen or to their building fund.

Burns Mortuary of Hermiston is in charge of arrangements.
