HERMISTON – Latte lovers, mocha maniacs and java jonesers, your cup runneth over.

Starbucks Coffee plans to locate a store in Hermiston, officials here said Tuesday.

The Seattle-based coffee giant will take over the former Arby’s restaurant location on the corner of North First Street and Elm Avenue, said Hermiston Building Official Mike Ward.

Ward said Starbucks had been interested in the site near Wal-Mart and the future home of Home Depot for about three months. He said the official paperwork was received by the city late last week. He did not know when Starbucks planned to move into the location or open for business.

Calls to representatives from Starbucks made Tuesday and this morning were not returned.

The Hermiston Arby’s closed on March 11, owner Elmer Alcorn said. He’s keeping his Pendleton location open.

“I’m getting older and slowing down,” Alcorn said. “One’s probably enough for me right now.”

Alcorn said he is selling the property to Retail Property Management out of Walla Walla, which will then lease the building to Starbucks.

Representatives from Retail Property Management also could not be reached for comment.

Despite the new competition from the corporate coffee house, Tracy Finck, manager of Obie’s Express just a few blocks south, said she is not worried.

Obie’s has been in Hermiston in one form or another for about 15 years.

“It could end up being a good thing, their prices are a little higher,” she said. “We’re from Hermiston and that kind of helps. You go where somebody knows you.”
