LONG CREEK – J.F. “Bud” Walton, 89, a lifelong Long Creek rancher, died Wednesday, March 2, 2005 at his home.

Recitation of the holy rosary will be at 5 p.m. Friday in the chapel at Burns Mortuary of Pendleton. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at noon Saturday at St. Katherine’s Catholic Mission in Long Creek.

Mr. Walton was born Jan. 22, 1916, at Fox to Cleveland and Agnes French Walton. He attended one-room schools in Ritter and Long Creek before finishing his education at St. Joseph Academy in Pendleton. He worked trailing cattle for the family ranch from Long Creek to Heppner from the time he was 13 years old.

On Oct. 10, 1936, he married Katherine “Kay” Johnson. They had four children, James, Paul, J. Tim and Nancy, all of whom stayed in the Long Creek area, running the 100-year-old Walton Ranch, a Hereford operation.

Mr. Walton enjoyed dancing so much that as a young man he rode his horse from Long Creek to Ritter and back for dances. In his later years, he enjoyed running his portable sawmill, riding his horse, gardening and spending time with his grandchildren.

He was a member of the Elks Lodge and St. Katherine’s Catholic Mission Church.

Survivors include two sons, Paul and his wife, Sue, and J. Tim and his wife, Patricia, all of Long Creek; a sister, Betty Newman of Sun City, Calif.; a niece and a nephew; 13 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Kay; a son, James; a daughter, Nancy Carey; a sister, Bernice Carney, and a nephew.

The family suggests memorial contributions to the North Side Ambulance, Long Creek, or St. Katherine’s Mission in care of Tim and Patti Walton, 42901 Highway 395 North, Long Creek, OR 97856.
