SPOKANE – Three new private cereal grain varieties have been introduced into the Pacific Northwest.

Joe McDonald of Pendleton Grain Growers and president of the Genetic Marketing Group LLC, announced the new varieties Monday.

The three varieties are Buck Pronto, a red spring wheat from Trigen Seed LLC. The second is PB1-95-2R-522, which will be named Spaulding, from breeder Wayne McProud, Plant Breeders 1, Moscow, Idaho. This is a two-row spring feed barley. Third are Ql and Q2, a new line of genetics from the breeding program of Dr. Peter Goldmark of Double J Ranch Inc., Okanogan, Wash.

“These are really two separate varieties, but of the same genetic parentage of an Eltan/Madsen cross with snow mold resistance and they are fall white wheats,” McDonald said, adding, “These two varieties appear to have strong yield potential outside of the typical Eltan area. Q2 yielded second place in our strip trials here in Pendleton last season.”

McDonald said the Genetic Marketing Group is a new association of certified seed companies that have come together to create access to new and improved seed and to distribute high quality seed to growers throughout the Pacific Northwest.

“It is our intent to concentrate on varieties that have better agronomic potential and milling qualities that better meet end use demand,” McDonald said.
