PENDLETON – Roscoe Harry Kelley Jr., an area resident for 70 of his 78 years, died Monday, Jan. 17, 2005, at Jonathan M. Wainwright Memorial Veterans Administration Medical Center in Walla Walla.
The funeral for Mr. Kelley will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Jan. 21, in the chapel at Burns Mortuary of Pendleton. Private family interment will be at Skyview Memorial Park, Highway 395, south of Pendleton. Friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday from 1-3 p.m. for viewing.
Mr. Kelley was born at Milton-Freewater, April 19, 1926, to Roscoe Harry Kelley Sr. and Mildred Huber-Kelley. He grew up in the Milton-Freewater area and graduated from Mac-Hi in 1945. He joined the U.S. Navy and served for nine years during World War II and the Korean War and was stationed in Rhode Island.
While in the military he met Alyce Jane Simmons whom he married on Jan. 20, 1954, at Fall River, Mass. After his military service, he and his wife made their home at Pendleton where he was employed as a construction laborer. He worked on several projects including Hells Canyon Dam and the John Day Dam.
Mr. Kelley enjoyed baseball, football, fishing, hiking and hunting. In his later years, he walked daily with his best friend, Loran. He loved a good card game as well as gambling and slots.
He was a member of the Christian Church.
Survivors include a daughter, Beverly Jane Rosario of Honolulu, Hawaii; sons: Patrick Dan Kelley and Timothy Dee Kelley, both of Pendleton, and Michael Lee Kelley of Ontario, and eight grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Alyce Jane Kelley in 2002, and by a brother, Richard Keith Kelley, who died in 1979.
