Maze opens at a spooky time of the year

HERMISTON – It’s easy to get lost among the 10-foot-high stalks in the Get A-Maized corn maze on the eastern outskirts of town.

With more than four miles of trails looping and dead-ending over 14 acres of corn, a person almost needs a trick to get through the maze in an hour. Bob Wolfe, owner, has one piece of advice.

“If you get stuck, look for a 10- or 12-year-old kid and follow them,” he said, smiling. “Most of the time they can beat an adult through the maze. It’s pretty amazing.”

In its fourth year of providing spooky “agri-tainment,” as Wolfe puts it, the Get A-Maized corn maze opens for business tonight.

This year’s theme is “God Bless America.”

From inside the maze a person might not realize it, but the trails make up a design that includes a flag, an eagle and a blackhawk helicopter, in honor of Wolfe’s brother, Jeff, an Army helicopter pilot serving in Iraq.

“We wanted to be a little more patriotic, to show we’re grateful for what we have here in the United States,” Wolfe said.

In previous years the maze has been designed around a castle. Despite this year’s lack of a Halloween theme, Wolfe said it’s not for the faint of heart.

“It’ll give somebody a little bit of a spook,” he said.

It is Kelly Murray’s third year helping out with the maze. She said she “can’t stay away.” The real estate broker from Hermiston admitted she gets so excited for the event that when the Halloween season ends she gets a little blue.

“I don’t want it to end,” she said.
