BEND – A disputed goal early in the first half set the tone of the game Saturday as Hermiston lost 4-0 to Mountain View in Intermountain Conference play.
The Bulldogs (1-2 IMC) disputed the goal by the Cougars, saying the ball didn’t cross the line.
“We lost our focus a little after that disputed goal, and they scored again,” Bulldogs coach Tim McCreary said. “We defended pretty well and overall played a strong game.”
The Cougars scored their last two goals of the game in the final five minutes.
McCreary praised the defensive play of Hermiston midfielders Gabe Ortega and Humberto Garcia along with Rocky Ortega.
On Thursday, the Bulldogs travel to Hood River.
Bucks blanked
BEND -The Summit boys soccer team put up six goals in the first half alone Saturday and went on to post a 9-0 Intermountain Conference victory over Pendleton.
Despite the lopsided score, Pendleton coach Dan Riley said he liked what he saw from his team for the most part.
“Summit’s first goal came in the 25th minute, so we had some stretches of playing good,” Riley said. “But Summit’s been playing together for a long time and know where each other is going to be on the field.”
Riley also singled out midfielders Paul Condon and Eric Smootz for their formidable play.
On Thursday, Pendleton (0-3 IMC, 0-5) is at The Dalles.
Vikings down Cougars
UMATILLA – With three goals by Juan Campos in a total of 11 minutes, the Umatilla boys soccer team flew past Ukiah 8-3, raising their record to 5-0 in the 2A/1A Special District 5.
The Vikings were looking at a 1-0 deficit after Ukiah started the scoring with a goal in the 9th minute of the game.
“We started passing more and were able to score this week,” Umatilla coach Lupe Escovedo said. “We are playing together as a team, and that makes us more confident about the things that we could do on the field.”
Umatilla only took eight minutes to answer with a goal by Juvencio Garcilazo in the 17th minute of the first half.
Umatilla then scored six unanswered goals – three from Campos, two from Alejandro Espinoza, and one from Yovani Barajas – to take the lead for good.
“We started slow and couldn’t get a rhythm going,” Escovedo said. “They (the Cougars) were dominating in the first 15 minutes and we dominated the rest of the game.”
Umatilla will face Mac-Hi on Thursday.
