The North Fork John Day Ranger District reported one new fire from the storms on Monday, with one more reported by the state Department of Forestry. The Forest Service expected to see more lightning fires pop up later in the week as daytime temperatures moved back into the 90s.

The storm, while causing considerable damage in neighboring Union County, caused little or no damage to crops in Umatilla County.

The wheat crop appears to be unscathed, said Mary Corp of the OSU Extension Service. No crop damage has been reported in Umatilla County.

Golf ball-sized hail and heavy rain was reported in southern Umatilla County Monday. Pendleton received a record three-quarters of an inch of ran over the 24-hour period ending Tuesday morning.

Although some farmers had to allow fields to dry out after Monday’s rain, the wheat harvest around the county is continuing.
