Good animation in ‘Brother Bear,’ but film disappoints

I took the kids to take in Disney’s latest, “Brother Bear.” There was 10-year-old Tony, 7-year-old Alena and 3-year-old Tanisha.

I (no age given) was disappointed in the movie. There weren’t any really funny, good parts other than the ones featured in the TV promotions. Tony said it was OK but kind of sad. Tanisha lost interest, and for the last 45 minutes danced in front of the first row of seats. Alena said it was good, but she may have been trying to convince herself of that.

There’s a lot of symbolism in the movie that was lost on the kids. The music (by Phil Collins) was good and the moose characters and bear cub, Koda, were funny, but the conflict between the three Indian brothers was pretty tense. The oldest brother died right off the bat trying to save the other two from a bear (Koda’s mother). The little brother, Kenai, is transformed into a bear by his brother’s spirit, I guess, to teach him a lesson on revenge and family honor.

The animation is really something as all Disney movies are but maybe I just wasn’t in the mood for this kind of a movie. We enjoyed “Elf” more.
