PENDLETON- Juan Caratachea Sanchez, a Milton-Freewater man charged with raping a young girl in 1999, pleaded guilty but insane Friday morning in Umatilla County Circuit Court.
Deputy District Attorney Kristi Hagey said Sanchez, 61, pleaded guilty to one count of first-degree rape and was placed in the jurisdiction of the psychiatric security review board for the next 20 years – the maximum sentence he could have received had his case gone to trial.
“He unlawfully and knowingly, by forcible compulsion, engaged in sexual intercourse with a minor female who was not a stranger to him,” Hagey said.
In exchange for pleading guilty to one count of first-degree rape, all other charges against Sanchez were dropped by the District Attorney. Those charges included three more counts of first-degree rape, two counts of first-degree sodomy, four counts of first-degree sex abuse, five counts of second-degree sex abuse and three counts of third-degree rape.
The incidents took place sometime between July 21, 1999, and July 20, 2000, Hagey said. Sanchez will be sent to a state psychiatric hospital, and the Department of Human Services will determine in which which state that will be.
