Quirks work for fun afternoon

Every now and again, one needs to indulge in a movie that features an equal balance of sarcasm, action, drama, comedy and romance. “Once Upon a Time in Mexico” is such a film.

The quirky action film stars Johnny Depp and Antonio Banderas, with smaller supporting roles by other big names, such as Enrique Iglesias. Although it was a well-rounded cast, it did prove to be a bit too large, as there were too many characters to keep up with at times.

Aside from that aspect, however, this was a fun and interesting film. I enjoyed how it incorporated different quirks of the characters’ personalities into the action packed script. It made them appear more human, even if they were seemingly flying up walls and across rooftops, and dodging bullets almost “Matrix” style.

Depp’s character, a trigger-happy CIA agent with a penchant for Mexican cuisine, never did seem to put down his cellular telephone, and Banderas’s character, El Mariachi, was never too far from his beloved guitar.

If the purpose of the film’s title was to imply that it might be a little unrealistic at times, then it did its duty well. Nonetheless, it was an enjoyable way to spend a Sunday afternoon.

I’d recommend this picture to all Depp and Banderas fans, as well as to those who appreciate the art of sarcasm. Everyone else may not enjoy it quite so much, so maybe sit this one out – at least until it comes out on video.
