PENDLETON – Garrett Lee Smith, 21, of Pendleton, died Monday, Sept. 8, 2003, at Orem, Utah, a day before his 22nd birthday.

Private services will be held.

He was born to Gordon H. and Sharon L. Smith at Seattle, on Sept. 9, 1981. He grew up in Pendleton, attending Pendleton schools, participating in organized sports and earning his Eagle Scout badge. During his sophomore year of high school, his family moved to Washington, D.C. where he attended The Bullis Academy and there he participated in football and wrestling.

He returned to Pendleton his senior year to graduate with his friends. At the time of his death he was pursuing a degree in culinary arts at Utah Valley College in Orem.

He served a two-year mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the England Manchester Mission.

His joys included his family, friends, pets and hobbies. He loved cars, bicycling, hunting, music, food and spending time with his buddies. It was said he would be remembered for his big-hearted smile and generous friendship.

Survivors include his parents, Sen. Gordon and Sharon Smith of Pendleton; sisters, Brittany Smith of Provo, Utah, and Sarah Frehner of Las Vegas, Nev., and brother Morgan Smith of Pendleton.

The Garrett Lee Smith Memorial Fund has been established at St. Anthony Hospital, 1601 S.E. Court Ave., Pendleton, OR 97801. The fund will be used for the further development of resources and information on depression, suicide and mental wellness. Contributions may be made directly or through Bishop Funeral Chapel, P.O.
