MILTON-FREEWATER – A graveside service for Randy Phillips will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at Mount Hope Cemetery in College Place. A memorial service will be held at 3:30 p.m. Saturday at the Village Seventh-day Adventist Church in College Place. Friends may call from 7-9 p.m. today and from 8:30 a.m. to noon, from 1-5 p.m. and from 7-9 p.m. Thursday at Munselle-Rhodes Funeral Home, 902 S. Main, in Milton-Freewater, for viewing.

Pastor Phillips, 59, of Milton-Freewater, died Monday, Sept. 1, 2003, at Spokane.

He was born Nov. 18, 1943, at Huntingdon, Tenn., to Eddie and Edna Fry Phillips. The family moved to Granger, Wash., in 1945. He attended Granger Junior Academy, and when he was 11 years old, he was baptized in the Granger Seventh-day Adventist Church. He attended Pendleton Junior Academy at Pendleton, and graduated from Monterey Bay Academy in La Selva Beach, Calif. in 1962. He then attended Walla Walla College in 1962-1963.

On July 19, 1964, he married Jewell Rasmussen at Spokane.

He joined the Army in 1966 and served during the Vietnam War and was stationed at the Brooke General Hospital at Fort Sam Houston, Texas. In 1968 he received his honorable discharge and moved to Walla Walla. He graduated from Walla Walla College in 1971 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in theology. He graduated from Andrews University Seventh-day Adventist Theological Seminary in 1974 with a Master of Divinity Degree and was ordained as a Seventh-day Adventist Minister on July 17, 1977.

During his career, he pastored congregations in Pasco, Walla Walla, Pomeroy, Wash., Osborn, Idaho, St. Maries, Idaho, Tranquility, N.J., and Grandview, Wash. He served as the Church Ministries Director and Trust Services Director of the New Jersey Conference of Seventh-day Adventists. He became a certified financial planner in August 1994 and worked as a trust officer for the Upper Columbia Conference of Seventh-day Adventists from 1993 until his death.

He loved to sing and play the harmonica. He also enjoyed gardening, woodworking, camping, canoeing and especially enjoyed spending time with his family and helping others.

He was a member of the Village Seventh-day Adventist Church in College Place.

Survivors include his wife, Jewell Phillips at the home; son, pastor Greg Phillips of Medford; daughter, Krista Dalrymple of Spokane; father, Eddie Phillips of Milton-Freewater; sister Mary Coates of Milton-Freewater; three grandchildren; and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a grandson, Aidan Phillips; and his mother, Edna Phillips.
