CONCORD, Calif. – Jack Hynd Schaffer, 76, of Concord, Calif., a former Heppner and Pendleton area resident, died Wednesday, Aug. 6, 2003, at Mount Diablo Medical Center of medical complications.
A final farewell gathering will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday at the family home, 1818 Farm Bureau Road, Concord, Calif., with a graveside service to follow at Tulocay Cemetery in Napa, Calif.
Mr. Schaffer was born Nov. 10, 1926 at Heppner, to Annie and Elvin Schaffer and spent his younger life on a sheep ranch in Eastern Oregon. He attended schools in Heppner and in Pendleton, graduating in 1945 from Pendleton High School.
An avid mechanic, he took many specialized courses, he preferred heavy-duty mechanics for trucks and tractors, but was always available to help a friend with an ailing car!
He moved to California in 1955 and was employed at Lemers GMC in San Francisco. He met his wife to be, Norma, in California, and they were married in 1957.
He was employed as a mechanic by Contra Costa County for 24 years.
Mr. Schaffer was a member of the Diablo Radio Control Model Airplane Club and the Model-T Club.
Survivors include his wife of nearly 46 years, Norma, children, David Schaffer, Evin Knight, Clark Schaffer, and Marcus Schaffer; grandsons, Gabriel and Nathan, and sister, Doris Clerf of Kittitas, Wash.; and several other relatives and friends.
