Sunridge students honored at recognition

PENDLETON – Sunridge Middle School held its seventh annual eighth-grade recognition night, saluting the class of 2007.

According to counselor Barbara Larson, this event originated with the school’s transition from Pendleton Junior High to Sunridge Middle School. Recognition Night acknowledges all the students enrolled in the eighth grade. During the salute, each student is congratulated by administrators and counselors, and receives a folder with his or her portfolio materials and any certificates they were presented with during the evening.

Staff coordinate the program portion of the evening for the presentation of awards. In addition, the Jazz Band performed as guests arrived prior to the program. The Chamber Choir performed a favorite selection during the program. Parents pulled together the transformation of the gym into an auditorium atmosphere and coordinated all the party details from food to pictures, games and dancing.

The students also carried some responsibility for the evening. One of those responsibilities was the selection of a speaker for their program. A perennial favorite has been Steve Cary, who received a heartfelt standing ovation as he is retiring from teaching. Music for the processional and recessional is always part of the student decision-making, along with decorating for their dance that follows the program.
