Umpua Valley, North Valley win rodeo titles

HERMISTON – The Intermountain Rodeo team played host to a three-performance, two-day rodeo last weekend at the Farm-City Pro Rodeo Arena at the Umatilla County Fairgrounds.
Umpqua Valley claimed the girls team title with North Valley taking first in boys team competition; each were repeat winners from the previous week in Redmond.
Mitch Coleman claimed the all-around boys title, the steer wrestling title and the saddle bronc title. He bulldogged his steer in 7.19 seconds and posted a bronc ride of 67 points. He also teamed with Brandon Beers to win the team roping title with a run of 6.65 seconds.
Bailey Gow won the girls all-around, with Sammy Jo Willis taking the rookie cowgirl award. R.J. Clingman won the rookie cowboy honors.
Hermiston’s Lacey Mespelt placed in three events, with a ninth-place 10.70 goat-tying run, a ninth-place barrel run at 18.405 and was 21.922 in pole bending. Casie Sturza was seventh in the barrel racing at 18.358 and Andy Carlson was seventh in boys cow cutting. Shelby Smith of Hermiston was sixth in team roping heading for Clingman and posting a time of 12.49.
The overall event winners included Roger Anderson, with a 59-point ride in bareback competition and Cal Hernman, who was the only contestant to ride his bull. His efforts paid off with a 74-point ride. Travis Hampton won the calf roping with a 11.90-second run and Colleen Kingsbury won the barrel racing with a run of 17.822. Danielle Woodruff posted a pole bending run of 20.845 seconds to win the event and Jamie Solesbee won the pole bending at 2.64. Gow was the fastest goat-tying competitor, getting her job done in 7.96. Sean Santucci scored 72 points to win the boys cow cutting and Jackie Rhoden won on the girls side with a 73.
