PENDLETON – Western Mennonite jumped out to a 33-21 lead entering the fourth quarter and held off a St. Mary’s rally to capture the third-place trophy at the OSAA/US Bank/Les Schwab Tires boys basketball tournament at the Pendleton Convention Center Saturday.

The Pioneers, who didn’t shoot a free throw in the first half, converted 12 of 19 foul shots in the second half.

Robby Gilliam scored a game-high 17 points to lead the Pioneers, while teammates Ben Kroes and Phil Baker added 16 and 11 points, respectively. Kroes also led Western Mennonite with 13 rebounds and three steals.

St. Mary’s received 12 points, four blocked shots and nine rebounds from Michael Fiddler. James Kulig chipped in 10 points for the Crusaders.

Neither team shot particularly well from the field as St. Mary’s shot 27 percent and Western Mennonite finished at 34 percent.

St. Mary’s took home the sixth-place trophy.

Harrisburg 58, Imbler 49

The Harrisburg Eagles used a 20-11 third quarter to defeat Imbler 58-49 and capture fourth place at the Class 2A OSAA/US Bank/Les Schwab Tires boys basketball tournament Saturday.

The teams were tied at halftime, but the Eagles found their shooting touch in the second half, shooting 57 percent from the floor over the final two quarters.

Daniel Johnson led Harrisburg with 14 points, to go along with six rebounds and four steals. Josiah O’ Hare added 11 points, while Jacob Malpass and Alan Strutz scored 10 points each for the Eagles.

Ethan Davis scored 21 points to lead the Panther attack, with Tanner McIntosh adding 13 and Colin Culbreth, 11. McIntosh and Culbreth grabbed nine rebounds each to share the team lead in that department.

The Eagles’ ability to hit the 3-point shot in the second half was the difference in the game, as Harrisburg, which made just 1 of 6 behind the arc in the first half, drilled 3 of 5 the final two quarters.

The Panthers, who entered the tournament as the No. 1 team in the state, took home the seventh-place trophy.
