PORTLAND – A Lebanese immigrant who allegedly told police he had been trained by Palestinian guerrillas was sentenced Wednesday to 21/2 years in prison for firearms, fraud and immigration charges.
Ali Khaled Steitiye, 39, was arrested last fall by federal authorities who raided his apartment and confiscated weapons, computer equipment, documents and other materials, including $20,000 in cash and a plaque bearing the word “Hamas,” the name of a militant group that has carried out suicide bombings in Israel.
U.S. District Court Judge Anna Brown stressed, however, that she found no reason to believe Steitiye was involved in terrorist activity, as government prosecutors had argued was a possibility in his trial.
Steitiye told the court Wednesday he was sorry for his actions. “I’m not proud of what I did. I’m ashamed,” he said.
Brown also sentenced Steitiye, who lived in Beaverton, to three years of probation and fined him $41,805 for misuse of food and health care benefits. She said the Immigration and Naturalization Service would likely strip Steitiye of his U.S. citizenship and deport him after he serves his sentence.
Investigators say Steitiye told them he received training at guerrilla camps in Lebanon. A calendar found in the October raid had the date Sept. 11 circled.
