CORVALLIS – Oregon State rolled over UNLV, but the talk immediately afterward wasn’t about the victory. The Beavers were already focused on Fresno State and revenge.

“It was a real interesting trip down there last year, that I’ve remembered every night of my life for the last 365 days,” Beavers coach Dennis Erickson said.

Last season Oregon State traveled to their opener down in Fresno, Calif., with high hopes. The Beavers were ranked No. 10 and Sports Illustrated had crowned them as the nation’s top team.

But the dream was quickly shattered. The frenzied Fresno fans taunted the Beavers with chants of “Overrated! Overrated!” and the Bulldogs went on to win, 44-24.

Even quarterback Derek Anderson, who threw for five touchdowns and ran for another in Oregon State’s 47-17 rout of UNLV Saturday night, was looking ahead to the rematch.

“Maybe I’ve exceeded expectations so far but we’ve got to come out next week and face Fresno State,” he said.

Anderson, a towering 6-foot-6 sophomore, took over as starter this season from Jonathan Smith, who has become a graduate assistant coach.

Anderson’s five passing touchdowns matched the school record set by Erik Wilhelm against Akron in 1987. His six total scores tied the Oregon State record set by former Heisman Trophy winner Terry Baker in 1962 against Iowa State.

Against UNLV, Anderson completed 20 of 26 passes for 356 yards.

Overall this season, he has thrown 12 touchdowns to eight different receivers and has already surpassed 1,000 yards passing. He has thrown 103 total passes in three games without an interception.

“He’s playing as well as any young quarterback I’ve had,” Erickson said. “He’s going to have to take it to the next level, though, because we are going to be playing next-level teams.”

Anderson ran for a 1-yard touchdown early, then threw a 28-yard TD pass to James Newson, a 19-yard scoring strike to Tim Euhus, a 3-yard scoring pass to Steven Jackson and a 2-yard TD toss to Jermaine Jackson – all before halftime.

He added a 40-yard pass to Shawn Kintner early in the third quarter, before backup Adam Rothenfluh came in for some snaps.

Newson had 17 catches for 167 yards for the Beavers, who racked up 461 total yards.

“We ran into a very, very good football team,” UNLV coach John Robinson said. “They got off to a very fast start, and they just tore our secondary to shreds.”

Joe Haro and Deon Burnett both scored on 1-yard runs and Dillon Pieffer added a 21-yard field goal for UNLV (1-2).

It marked the first time Robinson and Erickson had ever faced each other, despite long and successful careers in college and the NFL.

Robinson had been 11-0 against the Beavers as Southern California’s coach, his best record against any school. His last victory with USC was against the Beavers, 23-0, Nov. 15, 1997.
