From the editor’s desk: Readers are the key to news coverage

Glen Krebs, of Pilot Rock, addresses his concerns about wolves April 4, 2024, at U.S. Rep. Cliff Bentz's listening session on wolves in the Pendleton Convention Center.

No issue delivers quite the amount of angst than wolves and Rep. Cliff Bentz’s meeting at the Pendleton Convention Center on April 4 focused on the animals.

Bentz’s input on the issue is important because he is the chair of the Water, Wildlife and Fisheries subcommittee in Congress and therefore can shine some light on the issue that is extremely important to our region but may not have the kind of visibility it needs in other portions of the nation.

We didn’t just focus on Bentz’s presentation though. This week we delivered multiple stores in our regional editions that I think represent our varied communities well.

The possibility of high-speed internet, a ranch school partnership in Grant County along with a story on Oregon’s Death with Dignity Act were just some of the stories we were able to give to our readers.

Wolves probably dominated the interest level as they should and it was interesting to read Bentz’s views on the subject. As with many issues in today’s America, the future of wolves is one clouded through rhetoric and misinformation so it is good to see Bentz take time to sit down and listen to regional voters.

As we move into the future I hope that we can continue to provide the kind of news coverage you need and deserve. That’s why I put a high premium on crafting a news direction that is designed to do many different things at once. At the end of the day, though, the key individual in our planning for news is you, the reader.
