From the editor’s desk: Providing news the reader can use

Many readers probably already saw our story regarding Gov. Tina Kotek’s one-hour video roundtable with editors and reporters of the EO Media Group or watched the interview in its entirety.

First, we appreciate the governor setting aside time to talk to us. The governor outlined several key goals for the state, including efforts to increase housing and boost education.

She also made it clear she wants to listen to the needs of Oregonians and that should be good news for readers.

The ability for us to meet and talk with the governor is one of those key pillars in our Democracy. Such meetings allow us to ask questions and then, in turn, distribute that information back to readers.

In a sense, our newsroom provides a crucial bridge in such situations between readers and their elected leaders. Our job, then, is to ensure the questions are relevant and that the answers we receive are clear and, if not, that we strive to achieve clarity.

That span of communication is important as it furnishes key information that many readers would otherwise not have access to.

As a newspaper or a digital information platform, we have a responsibility to provide as much information to our readers as possible in a timely and relevant manner.

It is important for you, the reader, to be able to rely on us as a trustful conduit of information. That’s why we strive hard every day to deliver news that is factual and relevant. Readers cannot make good decisions about political issues or their elected leaders unless they have all the information necessary. That’s why we will continue to work to give you, the reader, news you can use and news that gives each one the amount of context they need to fairly evaluate an event or a newsmaker such as the governor.
