From the editor’s desk: East Oregonian newsroom shows its versatility

Published 9:00 am Saturday, March 2, 2024

Daniel Pierce practices with an excavator Feb. 15, 2024, as Daniel Shoemaker looks on. Pierce and Shoemaker are incarcerated at Eastern Oregon Correctional Institution, Pendleton, and are taking a five-week heavy equipment operator course inside the Baker Technical Institute's mobile training lab on the prison grounds.

A quick glance at our website or front page of our editions last week should give our readers a good example of how versatile our newsroom is.

From a nitrate pollution lawsuit to a story about Eastern Oregon Correctional Institution inmates learning jobs skills to the return of salmon to McKay Creek — after 30 years — our reporters furnish readers with a broad display of news that covers a host of subjects.

That type of news coverage, of course, is our goal. We want to ensure that we give readers as much of a broad outlook on their community as possible.

That’s not an easy task but it is one we, and I, believe is crucial to not only remain relevant but to also fulfill our primary mission: Delivering news you can use.

The ability to provide readers with key stories that illustrate our communities and the places where we live, work and play is a goal we take seriously and plan to expand on. We remain relevant by furnishing readers with the right kind of news and the right time.

Relevancy is more important now than ever before as our lives are bombarded by a range of different methods to access news on a variety of digital platforms.

We are committed to creating a place — whether it’s on the web or in our print editions — where readers can quickly access information to give them a wide-range view of our region and the important issues that impact us all.
