From the editor’s desk: Delivering a news product readers want

- Interstate 84 East reopens Jan. 10, 2024, after inclement weather for much of the morning, off of exit 216 near Pendleton.
Catering to a region-wide audience can seem, at first glance, to be a big lift but our focus is firmly on presenting a viable news product over a multi-county area.
That doesn’t mean, of course, we are neglecting news in your hometown or around your corner. What it does mean is we want to merge our news coverage into a local/regional paradigm that covers a wide area and continues to deliver news you can use.
In the coming months, I expect our work to continue to deliver the kind of news product readers need and want.
Our allegiance to the reader is paramount and we want to ensure that when a reader views our product — either in print or online — they receive the absolute best we can deliver.
As many already know, the news business in the U.S. faces some tough challenges. Yet, I believe by providing a product that fits a variety of needs — both local and regional — we can and will continue to enhance our future opportunities, not only as a business but as a clearing house for news in Eastern Oregon.
I think just a quick glance at the stories in our newspapers — from John Day to Baker and from Wallowa to Hermiston — this week should illustrate that we are striving every day to fulfill the wishes and needs of our readers.
Hopefully, as the future beckons, we will be able to continue to build on a solid news foundation that is a benefit to all of our readers across the region.
